Blue and Green Music by Georgia O'Keeffe
The artwork I chose to analyze is a piece titled Blue and Green Music by artist Georgia O' Keeffe. I like this piece of art because the blues and greens give a relaxing mood to the piece and makes me feel calm. The curving lines gives the piece movement and reminds me of waves which adds to the calming effect. There are varying contrasts of the tones of color and plays of light and dark contrast, which gives the piece depth and makes it interesting to look at. The use of color contrast and different line variations lets the viewers eyes move with the piece and it brings it to life. I think the artist, Georgia O'Keeffe used the movement of lines and the change in color tone to symbolize the movement of music and creates a visual representation of the vibrations of music through sound waves.
When researching this artwork, I found a website dedicated to Georgia O'Keeffe work and read a little back out on this specific piece. According to the website, O' Keeffe was quoted describing this piece as "the idea that music could be translated into something for the eye". I think her intention for this piece was portrayed accurately.
For the placement of this piece of art, I could see it in a chill coffee shop or even a jazz club. If I owned this piece, I would probably hang it in my bedroom because it would help me unwind and take my mind off of the stressful work day.
All in all, I was drawn to this piece by Georgia O'Keeffe because of the line movement, contrast in colors and the representation of sound through art.

Hi Brianna,
ReplyDeleteAwesome job with the analysis, I would agree that O'Keefe's goal was to portray the movement of music in a physical form. I would say that perhaps the reason she use the differing contrasts was not only to catch the viewer's attention, but to represent the varying levels of music. Whiter hues being the high tones we hear, while darker hues are the low tones in songs. These hues are blended together in the "waves" showing how these tones intertwine throughout music, rarely being a standalone element.
As for placement, I think it would be a crime if wasn't found in jazz club! I feel this art captures the style of jazz, it is hard to pinpoint, but it just screams the "jazz era" at me. Great job!
This piece seems so calming just by looking at it! I definitely agree with the peaceful some music can bring translates over to the calmness this piece brings. Thank you for sharing!
